This is Amy Peters, star right winger for the Wayne State Women's Ice Hockey team. Wayne State University is located in Detroit, MI. This year is our first year as a Division One hockey team EVER. I signed with this team in June of 1999, after I gradated highschool. This year we have played all sorts of teams from all over the country. We have gone as far west as Minnesota and as far east as Maine. This year, since it is our first year, was a growing year and we grew leaps and bounds. We have 10 forwards, 4 defense, and 3 goalies. Our team consists of 6 Canadians and 11 Americans. The Canadians are from British Colombia, Ottawa, Essex, and Niagara. Our Americans are from all over the South-Eastern Detroit area.
Next season is going to be very exciting. Our coaching staff has been working day and night recruiting new freshman for the upcoming season. We have girls from all over Michigan and Canada! As of now, we have 12 new girls coming in to support our 7 veteran players.
Our coaching staff is one of our strong points in the program. Head Coach Thomas O'Malley played and coached at Boston College. He started the Women's program there and coached there for fifteeen years before coming to Wayne State. Our Assistant/Defense Coach, Heather Davidson, is fresh out of college from Cornell University. This is her first year coaching and will be back for many more seasons.
